Les Salons Structuralisme
Video recordings of a series of weekly conversations, held in the Structuralism exhibition, between contemporaries, architects, critics, researchers, building occupants and building clients. The themes of the Salons are related to the four acts of the exhibition. The talks were led by Dirk van den Heuvel.
Dual exhibition in four acts
Structuralism takes the form of a dual exhibition; one part is curated by architect Herman Hertzberger, the other part, An Installation in four acts, shows the first outcomes of a long-term scientific research project by the Jaap Bakema Study Centre. In this part, structuralism is addressed from the perspective of the scientist and researcher. Curator, theorist and researcher Dirk van den Heuvel of TU Delft presents the first results of his research on Structuralism in collaboration with the Jaap Bakema Study Centre.
The first act was about Education, the birth of structuralism. 'Ideals', the second act (as of 27 October), presents ideal Dutch structuralist projects. On view are submissions to the Amsterdam City Hall competition of 1967, with proposals by John Habraken, Herman Hertzberger, Gert Boon, Leo Heijdenrijk, Jan Verhoeven and others. A selection of ideal geometries, with work by Jaap Bakema, Joost Baljeu, Theo van Doesburg, Gerrit Rietveld, Dick van Woerkom and more, shows the debt Dutch structuralism owes to De Stijl. Also included are the Agora and Bastille projects by Piet Blom for the University of Twente. Act three and four deal with Building and The City respectively.
