Rotterdam for Real
City plans are often only partly based on the realities of their current residents, instead reflecting projections of ideal situations and citizens. With this in mind, Het Nieuwe Instituut created the Rotterdam for Real framework.
This programme links various projects of Het Nieuwe Instituut to the city of Rotterdam. As well as putting the use of, involvement in, and control over urban space on the agenda, the programme also involves a new generation of Rotterdammers whose views are just as important in addressing the city's urban issues.
The projects contributing, in whole or in part, to Rotterdam for Real include:
Just Hanging Out
The New Garden
As a widely used public space around Het Nieuwe Instituut, the Just Hanging Out programme reinforced The New Garden's unscripted nature without taking it over.
Going South
Going South is a programme in which stories, images, objects, landscapes, and atmospheres of 'the south' are collected, read, and presented.
For the Culture
Since 2018, Het Nieuwe Instituut has worked with Malique Mohamud of Concrete Blossom on the Rotterdam for Real programme, sharing the ambition to investigate and demonstrate the importance of informal culture for the city and its young residents.
For the Record
As a live, collective research programme, For the Record explores video culture and its role as a public space for activism and emancipation.
Neuhaus
From May to September 2019, Het Nieuwe Instituut transformed into Neuhaus, an academy for more-than-human knowledge. Acting as a hybrid of a museum, an archive and an academy, this new type of knowledge institution offered a different perspective on the City of Rotterdam.
