Prix de Rome Architecture 2014
From 16 October on Het Nieuwe Instituut is presenting the work of the eight nominees for the Prix de Rome Architecture 2014. As the oldest and biggest Dutch prize for artists and architects younger than 40, the Prix de Rome has been organized and financed since 2012 by the Mondriaan Fund. The exhibition showcases the importance of design and innovation, key principles of all activities at Het Nieuwe Instituut.
Assignment
Eight architects, landscape architects and urban designers were nominated for the Prix de Rome Architecture 2014. They spent recent months working on a fictional assignment for the area where Hoogstraat and Binnenrotte intersect in Rotterdam. An international jury challenged the participants to come up with a vision to turn Hoogstraat into a vibrant, mixed-use city street. An intervention at Binnenrotte is intended to breathe life back into the old dam and connect with the history of Rotterdam.
Exhibition
The nominated projects will be displayed in the exhibition against the background of the complex, bleak and fragmented appearance of Hoogstraat today. The submissions present eight proposals to improve the fragmented public space by reconnecting it with its surroundings and residents.
