Mapping

The State of Eindhoven project asks why, how and with whom the citizens of Eindhoven will contribute to the smart city. Its ambition is to reassess the idea of the smart city starting from the requirements of the participatory society.

An important aim of The State of Eindhoven is to figure out what's going on in the city in both these spheres. Numerous projects are under way, with local people setting up a range of new studies and initiatives, but no one has an overview. Moreover, though the terms "participatory society" and "smart city" are frequently used, many people aren't sure what exactly they're supposed to mean. Which activities are part of the participatory society? Where and how is Eindhoven a smart city? Where are they occurring? Who are the initiators? Which parties are investing in them, and how much are they spending?

In mapping Eindhoven, we intend to supply concrete answers to questions like these that can bolster discussion within the State of Eindhoven project as well as outside of it. This type of information about Eindhoven has never been collected and visualised in one place before. The map consists of a growing number of layers of information, presented in different clusters. This initial publication focuses on mapping the welfare state and the participatory society.

It's important to note that this mapping is an ongoing process: we aim to visualise an increasing number of relevant data collections. Do you have ideas for certain types of information that belong on these maps? Do you know where we can find or request that information? If so, please email us at info@oscity.nl.

Moreover, while of course we strive to be as thorough as possible, we know no data set is ever truly complete. Do you notice information missing from a particular information layer? Please let us know at info@oscity.nl. With your input, we can keep improving the maps' completeness and accuracy.

How to use the map

The information on the map is organised in a large number of layers. At the top left of the map is a set of brief introductions. Each introduction concerns a particular selection of layers on the map. Each of these selections depicts a particular aspect of the state of Eindhoven.

To see the other information layers available on this map, click on "Show Legend".

Each layer can be separately turned on or off by clicking on the square. Clicking different combinations of layers will bring up different patterns. For example. you'll see that in neighbourhoods with relatively high unemployment, few houses are available for rent on Airbnb.

Clicking on individual symbols on the map will bring up the name or address of an organisation, available service or initiative according to the layer the symbol belongs to.

Following the name of every layer is an "i" for "information". Click on it to see a brief explanation of which information is visualised in that layer.

Use the plus and minus signs in the bottom left corner to zoom in and out.
