The Tool Shed: About Neighbourly Borrowing
The second public gathering unlocks the Tool Shed and aims to open doors and windows into a space where tools and methodologies are shared and exchanged with Yasmin Tri Aryani and Jasmin Sharif, networks, and attendees; learning from each other and expanding our understanding of collecting, archiving, or defining heritage.
25 May 2023 17:00 - 19:00
Building upon the previous gathering in February 2023, where Collecting Otherwise looked at various forms of the Tool Shed (shedding, after Working Group member Alfred Marasigan), the importance of Hard Work, Soft Work (Harriet Rose Morley) in the Tool Shed, as well as sharing Tools which are already part of the Tool Shed, such as Asterisk* and The Archival Care Rider, this event focuses on the question: how can we ensure not only that the Tool Shed facilitates and sustains the act of neighbourly borrowing, but can incorporate and encapsulate neighbourly connections and collaborations too?
Speakers
Yasmin Tri Aryani (researcher, illustrator, and Working Group member) will share her experiences in organising collective walks with participants in Bandung, Indonesia, around archival material present in the Collection of the Nieuwe Instituut. Read more about Mapping Collective Memories on the Tool Shed page.
Jasmin Sharif (programme maker) works with Concrete Blossom, the YUMNA Collective, and the Boekmanstichting and brings along tools for creating public access (to research).

The Tool Shed
The Tool Shed is a collaborative and public space for heritage access and inclusion, which is the focus of the third edition of Collecting Otherwise. It encourages borrowing, sharing, and developing reparative archival methods and collections. The space is open for collective testing, exchanging tools and methodologies. It is similar to a workshop or laboratory, but also emphasises communal and accessible aspects, such as a neighbourly kitchen.
Collecting Otherwise
Drawing on the architecture collection of the Nieuwe Instituut’s, Collecting Otherwise explores the possibilities for an alternative architectural, heritage and archival practice, one that reflects a society that is constantly changing.
