Rosi Braidotti on Posthuman Feminism

On Friday May 20th, Het Nieuwe Instituut invited you to the presentation of 'Posthuman Feminism' (Polity Press, 2022), the new book by philosopher Rosi Braidotti. This third iteration of her Posthuman trilogy was presented in interaction with the music that runs as a score through her book by means of reflection, comments and annotation.

20 May 2022 17:00 - 19:30

From Björk to Beyoncé and from Laurie Anderson to Pussy Riot: all of these are covered in Posthuman Feminism, after Posthuman and Posthuman Knowledge the third and final instalment of the series on posthumanism, in which Rosi Braidotti explains its relationship with different forms of feminism. "You can read my book as a navigational tool to discover my own cartography and maybe make up your own," she says. "A good way to do that is through women's bands and popular music."

The presentation is flanked by various reactions from young (feminist) researchers and designers such as DJ collective AMPFEMININE. Shay Kreuger, who previously designed the For the Record evenings about music video culture at Het Nieuwe Instituut, will moderate the meeting.

After the presentation in the auditorium, Rosi Braidotti will sign copies of Posthuman Feminism, which is available at NAi Booksellers, and drinks and bites will be served in Het Nieuwe Café. You can also dance to the music of AMPFEMININE, who will provide a live DJ set.

About the book

"_Posthuman Feminism _is an analytic and creative response to contemporary conditions and a call to action. It highlights the constraints but also the potentialities available to feminst political subjects as they confront the ever-growing injustices of sexism, racism, ecocide and neoliberal capitalism."

The New Academy

The presentation also marks the public launch of The New Academy, an initiative of Het Nieuwe Instituut in collaboration with Rosi Braidotti. The New Academy departs from Braidotti's "posthuman" vision, which links an analysis of technology, ecology and socio-economic factors. This whole of people, animals, plants, insects, microbes and technology exists in a reciprocal relationship to each other. Understanding (the connection between) all these different aspects becomes crucial to initiate a transition. With Rotterdam as its testing ground, and together with designers, inhabitants and researchers The New Academy will focus on collecting and unlocking the mostly invisible knowledge of people and non-people needed to design a sustainable, socially just and inclusive city.

AMPFEMININE

AMPFEMININE is a five-piece DJ collective from Rotterdam. With their collective activities, AMPFEMININE gives space to female and non-binary DJs and producers. They organize parties, make radio shows, give master classes and made EQ The Industry with director Loes Korten, a documentary about female and non-binary producers from Rotterdam, produced entirely by women.
