Research Nights: Through Sounds x Rewire

Nieuwe Instituut and music festival Rewire invite you to an evening of listening, conversations and sharing. Following last year’s collaboration, Nieuwe Instituut and Rewire co-host an evening to explore coming-of-age experience through music, tracing how deeply personal encounters with music and sounds evolve into collective expressions and moments of gathering, where music becomes a companion in shaping identity in relation to place and others.

27 March 2025 18:00 - 20:00

How does music help shape our identity in relation to the place we are in and the people around us? Through the internet and club culture, music connects isolated experiences, creating networks of shared meaning and exchange. Tracks become social objects – telling stories, sparking connections and transforming spaces. We explore how individual and collective interact in the process of coming of age, by thinking about how music shapes personal and shared experiences.

This evening is the first in a series of joint events forming part of Rewire’s context programme. With contributions by Content Care, Juliette Lizotte and others. Federica Notari and Katía Truijen lead the discussion. More contributors will be announced soon.

Rewire

Rewire is an annual international festival dedicated to adventurous music, which takes place in The Hague from 3 to 6 April 2025 this year. In addition to the music and performances, Rewire’s context programme creates space for shared reflection and discussion by connecting artists and their different disciplines.

Through Sounds

Through Sounds is a long-term research project by Nieuwe Instituut that looks at this ‘sonic culture’ as a field for spatial and social design. Where people listen is connected to different structures – physical, social, political and socio-economic. We call them ‘listening infrastructures’. Looking at them helps us to understand where and how we access sound, and how we meet and form communities through it.

Research Nights

Research Nights are recurring events that focus on emerging interests, ongoing research and lines of research currently being explored by the research team of the Nieuwe Instituut. In an intimate and collaborative setting, the audience gains insight into the different stages of projects and shares ideas through dialogues, workshops, screenings or other experimental activities. During these evenings, the audience is invited to contribute to collective forms of research.
