Research Nights: The Black Technical Object
Join us for an evening celebration of the book The Black Technical Object: On Machine Learning and the Aspiration of Black Being by Ramon Amaro. We will explore the notion of “The Black Technical Object” over 3 Acts and one Epilogue, where each act unfolds as a different type of reading that connects everyday artistic practice with a theory of machine learning.
19 September 2024 16:00 - 19:30
The aim of the evening is to inspire alternative approaches to algorithmic practice through sound, performance and text with the goal of developing new, more affirmative and aspirational, methodologies that challenge the abstruse nature of programming, as well as the deep incursion of racial hierarchy in mathematics.
Programme
- 18.30 hr: Doors open (the Auditorium)
- 18.50 hr: Start of the programme
- 21.00 hr: End of programme
The book, The Black Technical Object: On Machine Learning and the Aspiration of Black Being, is informed by the seemingly incompatible relationship between machine learning, mathematics, and race. As an exploratory work, the book responds to an inadequate understanding of the history of mathematics and machine learning as well as the relationship between humans and machines that has to-date resulted in an — even unwitting — reduction of life chances.
Ramon Amaro is Senior Researcher for Digital Culture at the Nieuwe Instituut and lead of -1.
Research Nights
Research Nights are recurring events informed by emerging interests, ongoing investigations and lines of inquiry currently being explored within the Research team of the Nieuwe Instituut. In an intimate and collaborative setting, the public will gain insight into the various stages of projects and share ideas through dialogues, workshops, screenings or other experimental activities. During these evenings you are invited to contribute to collective forms of practicing research.
