What do outer space capsules, submarines, and office buildings have in common? Each is conceived as a closed system, a self-sustaining physical environment demarcated from its surroundings by a boundary that impedes the transfer of matter or energy. Contemporary discussions about global warming, recycling, and sustainability have emerged as direct conceptual constructs related to the analysis of closed systems. From the space program to countercultural architectural groups experimenting with autonomous living, Closed Worlds documents a deeply-rooted fantasy of architecture producing nature, and its manifestation in the very fabric of reality.

At the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia Lithuania presents its first individual pavilion, the Swamp School: an open-ended structure and learning lab to sense and discuss the future. The curatorial team of the Dutch Pavilion, in an ongoing search for collaboration, knowledge-sharing and solidarity across pavilions and borders, welcomes and hosts the Swamp School, in particular the Swamp Radio. In this event, the Swamp Radio will engage the audience in acoustic space explorations from radio experiments to environmental sound recordings, immersive sound, and data sonification.
