Nieuwe Instituut invites you to the festive kick-off of the exhibition in which we pay tribute to functional clothing together with researcher and curator Eldina Begic.

Featuring pieces by Massimo Osti, Maria Blaisse, Yohji Yamamoto, Nigel Cabourn, Lucy Orta, William Morris and Iris de Leeuw.

Discover the history and impact of the clothes that were originally designed as tools in Workwear. These garments have inspired everyday fashion and haute couture and have been embraced for decades by countless freethinkers, artists and politicians as symbols of solidarity and equality. Can workwear help us imagine the society of the future?

Especially for Workwear, Bonne Reijn of fashion label Bonne Suits has made a limited-edition Bonne Suits x Nieuwe Instituut jacket in an exclusive shade of green. There are only 100 of these jackets, and they will be available for the first time at the opening.

Opening programme

• 8.30 pm exhibition opening
• 9.00 pm welcome speech by director Aric Chen, introduction of Workwear with curator Eldina Begic and product drop of the limited-edition Bonne Suits x Nieuwe Instituut jacket, specially developed for Workwear
• 9.15 pm spoken word performance by Elten Kiene, who has written a poetic Workwear Manifesto especially for the exhibition
• Workwear is open all evening and you can also visit the exhibitions in the other museum galleries
• A DJ plays in the café until 11 pm.
