Opening Night
On Thursday evening, September 12, the Nieuwe Instituut celebrates the new cultural season with three new exhibitions to explore at -1, Gallery 3 and the Research Centre. Enjoy music, drinks and a special Thursday Night Detour. We’ll stay open late, and as always, admission on Thursday nights is free. Bring your friends, meet new people, strike up a conversation, and get inspired!

-1: Meet the new artists and researchers in residence during -1 Open House.
Gallery 3: In Gallery 3, the Washi Futurism exhibition by design duos Cream on Chrome and Craft Portrait premieres. This exhibition looks at the beauty, artisanship and innovative qualities of handmade Japanese paper, known as washi.
Research Centre: Explore the Built Homecoming exhibition at the Research Centre and discover the remarkable home archive of architects Aldo and Hannie van Eyck.
Gallery 0 and 2: If you haven’t yet seen IABR 2024: Nature of Hope or Dutch, More or Less, you’ll have extended opening hours this evening to explore these exhibitions and stimulate your curiosity.
- 18:00-21:00 (-1): Enjoy a specially curated radio and music programme centred on digital culture, brought to you by Ramon Amaro, Benjamin Earl, and Thomas Orbon.
- 18:00 - 19:30 (Room 1): Design duos Cream on Chrome and Craft Portrait are launching their new book Washi Futurism. In this book, they explore how the traditional Japanese craft of making washi paper can still inspire and develop today.
- 19:00 - 20:00 (Foyer): To delve further into architecture, join the Thursday Night Detour for a unique architecture tour by Detour Guide Wietske Flederus.
