Research Nights: Night of the Fellows

In this special edition of the Research Nights, this year's Nieuwe Instituut Fellows, Russel Hllongwane and Daniel Frota de Abreu, take over and engage in sharing their ongoing research practices, which they have developed as part of their fellowship around the theme Testing Grounds. The evening is moderated by Federica Notari.

22 June 2023 17:00 - 18:30

Call for Fellows: Testing Grounds, Nieuwe Instituut, 2022. Graphic design: Pleun Gremmen.

The Fellowship Programme of 2022-2023 of the Nieuwe Instituut focuses on the theme Testing Grounds, or specifically in supporting research practices as testing grounds by approaching these as action spaces and networks of relations to find research causes and trying out methodologies.

Russel Hllongwane will present his on-going research throughout the evening, sharing a performative sound piece.

Daniel Frota de Abreu will present part of the research related to the film As far as the world reaches, which he recently finished during the Fellowship. The film deals with Brazilian natural history in Dutch art and science collections, tackling some of the everlasting effects of colonialism in the way nature is represented and perceived today.

Speakers

Russel Hlongwane is a cultural producer and creative industries consultant based in Durban, South Africa. His work is located at the intersection of heritage, tradition, modernity and culture as it applies to various disciplines of artistic practice.

Daniel Frota de Abreu is a visual artist whose practice investigates the role of montage and fabulation in the documentation of natural and historical events. His research draws connections between preservation practices, geographical displacements of artifacts and political implications embedded in the production of scientific knowledge.

Research Nights

In an intimate and collaborative setting, the audience gains an insight into the various stages of projects and shares ideas through dialogues, workshops, screenings or other experimental activities. Join us and contribute to collective forms of doing research.

This event will take place physically at the Nieuwe Instituut and can also be joined online.
