-1 Séances #3: Desire&Technology Reading Group

What does it mean to desire in an increasingly algorithmic world? What does diversity in relation to societal technological trajectories entail? In the third session of –1 Séances: Desire&Technology, a six-part reading and discussion series by –1 Digital Lab, the reading group will explore the relationship between desire and openness to multiple developmental paths.

In this session, Milan Stürmer analyses Chinese philosopher Yuk Hui’s concept of technodiversity. He attempts to trace a new path between two polarised positions: high skepticism and distrust of technology and technological development on one hand, and the “technophiliac” or technosolutionist mindset typical of Silicon Valley on the other.

By taking into account contemporary debates on politics and ecology, the concept of technodiversity allows us to imagine other developmental paths that our society has not taken yet. Through the concept of technodiversity, Milan Stürmer will also reflect on desire as “bifurcations”, or, the openings of new possibilities.
