Members-only: Studio Visit @ SAWA
What makes a building the Building of the Year? And, more importantly, who creates such a building? During this Studio Visit, Members of the Nieuwe Instituut will get an exclusive insight into SAWA in Rotterdam. This 50-metre-tall circular timber residential building was awarded the BNA Best Building of the Year 2026. Robert Winkel, designer of SAWA and founder of Mei architects, will introduce us to his vision and working methods, show us around the studio and, of course, take us on a tour of SAWA itself.
13 November 2026 13:30 - 16:30
What makes SAWA so special?
The building is constructed almost entirely from CLT (cross-laminated timber), with the use of concrete kept to a minimum. This makes SAWA the first high-rise timber residential building in Rotterdam. It serves as a pioneering example for future generations of builders, with a strong focus on reducing CO₂ emissions. Its green terraces also contribute to urban biodiversity while fostering a sense of community among residents
Mei architects and planners
Founded in 2003, Mei architects and planners is a Rotterdam-based architecture practice specialising in housing, public buildings, adaptive reuse and urban development. A key aspect of the firm's work is the transformation of existing buildings, incorporating the historical, cultural and spatial qualities of a place into new designs. Through this approach, Mei creates sustainable environments for living, working and social interaction.
