On Wednesday 24 May 2017 Het Nieuwe Instituut will host an interview in the exhibition Architecture of Appropriation with Giovanni Bozzoli, co-founder of Macao in Milan, and Nicola Baratto, one of the initiators of The Wandering School project.

Macao is an independent centre for art, culture and research in Milan that is coordinated by an open assembly of artists and activists. The initiative started with the occupation of an abandoned skyscraper in the city centre, and is now based on a former meat trade site in the east of the city. Macao aims to conceive new ideas of what a cultural institution can be beyond its traditional understanding, while presenting a cross-sectorial cultural programme and researching labour conditions in cultural production. Currently, Macao is under threat of eviction.

In 2016 students from the Sandberg Institute's Dirty Art Department initiated The Wandering School: a series of events, interacting with the community of Macao and the local and international public for the Design Week and MiArt. Taking inspiration from radical schools and self-contained communities the school offered a place to sleep and dream, reflect and rave.
