Hungry EcoCities: AI and our relationship with food
Experience and taste the future of food, and talk to vegetables and other visitors! Together with the European STARTS project Hungry EcoCities and other partners in art and food innovation, the Nieuwe Instituut welcomes artists working at the intersection of science, technology and art on a healthy, sustainable and affordable agri-food system. They will demonstrate four prototypes that show how artificial intelligence can help urban eaters better understand where their food comes from and how it has travelled from the farm and greenhouse to their plate.
16 May 2024 17:00 - 19:30
Everyone who lives in a city has a complicated relationship with food. It almost always comes from outside the city, and it is unclear who was involved in producing it and under what circumstances. It is also often difficult to find alternatives. This means that trust in the food system is fragile. AI can help us gain more control over our food in many ways.
Tonight, Hungry EcoCities presents an interactive prototype park in collaboration with four artists who, over the past few months, have developed experiments with AI that redefine the relationship between the eater and the producer of food.

MVPxFFF (c) Genomic Gastronomy
MVPxFFF by Genomic Gastronomy will present a digital tool that generates recipes in which the often uncertain yields of food forests are supplemented by AI, with ingredients from other (sustainable) alternatives, creating fully nutritious and tasty meals. Some of the recipes will also be available for tasting during the event.
Jeroen van der Most
In Jeroen van der Most’s Culinary Journey, the Fact or Fictionaliser allows you to scan any vegetable with your phone and create a fictional advert about its journey. Using a slider in the app, you can decide whether the commercial should look like the real product, or whether it should have a more extravagant, high-end retail look.
Bernat Cuni
Food Dysmorphia by Bernat Cuni also offers the possibility to scan any vegetable and gain insights into the product. In addition to the morphs of your vegetables, you get insights from different perspectives that are part of the food chain. The app also provides local options for locally produced alternatives and organisations.
Nonhuman Nonsense
Nonhuman Nonsense’s Council of Food gives food a voice in the debate about the food system. Visitors to the event can ask a question, which sparks a debate as the food products start a discussion with each other.
Symposio
Symposio by Yiannis Kranidiotis is an interactive dining experience that combines sound detection technology with smart lighting control. Using various preset scenarios, it encourages healthier eating habits. Will this installation soon be at your table for conscious eating?
The above prototypes were developed within the European programme Hungry EcoCities in collaboration with artists from all over Europe, CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, Studio Other Space, In4Art and EatThis, KU Leuven, Brno University of Technology, Mendel University in Brno and various experts. Come along and experience, taste, and talk to vegetables and each other!
The Hungry EcoCities project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. It is part of the STARTS programme.
