The finissage of Het Nieuwe Instituut's exhibition Designing Scarcity will comprise a workshop on 31 August at which participants will disassemble the exhibition structure and use it to build new designs they can take away with them.

31 August 2014 11:00 - 13:30

Leading the workshop will be the exhibition's designer, Thomas Lommée. He built _Designing Scarcity_ using OpenStructures, a modular construction system of his own devising. OpenStructures is based on a simple geometric grid. Anyone can use it to design objects, and anyone can add parts, components and structures. It thus functions as a kind of collaborative Meccano. The system's open character encourages people to design and build structures collectively.

The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to OpenStructures and the available materials. After a brainstorming session, Lommée will help participants to turn their most viable ideas into workable designs, and the group will get to work.
