Design for Change #2: Protest and Publishing with Journal Safar
Want to spend an exciting evening exploring protest and design? The next Design for Change event presents two new publications. Journal Safar #9 explores the visual elements of resistance. Design Drafts #3 is a collaboration between the Nieuwe Instituut, Journal Safar and the writers Tala Abdalhadi, Myriam Amri, Shruti Hussain, Candice Jansen, and Alice Wan.
18 September 2025 17:00 - 19:00
The new editions of Design Drafts and Journal Safar are the result of a joint open call for submissions on the theme of protest in relation to design, urban interventions and visual culture. The selected writers were invited to attend writing and development sessions with the editorial teams.
The writers, editors and designers of the publications were also invited to attend an evening of lectures and discussions on publishing as a form of protest and as a means of sharing practices.

RSVPJournal Safar
Safar is a bilingual magazine about design and visual culture, published in Beirut. It was founded in response to the lack of critical writing on design in the Global South.
Design Drafts
Through its Design Drafts programme, the Nieuwe Instituut collaborates with various journals and publishing platforms to encourage a shared search for alternative ways of writing about design.
Design for Change
The Design for Change series explores how design, digital culture and architecture can address major global issues. Through this series, the Nieuwe Instituut provides a platform for designers, architects, digital artists and other cultural creators to share their insights and experiences. The conversations explore wide-ranging perspectives on challenging questions.
With support
The visit of Maya Moumne (Journal Safar’s Creative Director and Co-Founder) was made possible by the Nieuwe Instituut’s International Visitors Programme, with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
