Creative Cities: Quality of Life for an Ageing Population

The ageing of the population will have a major influence on tomorrow's cities. Obvious challenges will include the cost of care and the provision of elderly-friendly housing and transportation. Over the past decade, creative cities around the world have begun developing smart infrastructures to support the personal and collective needs of their ageing populations. But medical research also reveals another important factor: a social, creative lifestyle significantly improves quality of life. Held during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, this workshop will bring together experts and explore how a better quality of life for an ageing population can further strengthen sustainable urban renewal.
Coordinator of the workshop is Tim Vermeulen, Intendant for Het Nieuwe Instituut's programme in Eindhoven. Vermeulen studied Fine Arts and Photography in Brussels and Antwerp. Since 1998 he has been working as a design critic, curator, project director and moderator in Belgium and the Netherlands. His work focuses mainly on the social and cultural impact of design. Tim Vermeulen is a member of the editorial broard of What Design Can Do, an advisory board member of the Dutch Design Awards and a board member of Strijp Biennial. In 2009, Vermeulen joined Premsela where he managed the 'Designworld' program, Premsela's international programme. Since 2013, after the merger of the Premsela into Het Nieuwe Instituut, he continuous to set up new activities and programmes for Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam and Eindhoven.
ASEM networking programme
The workshop comprises part of a networking programme hosted by Het Nieuwe Instituut in conjunction with the sixth Asia-Europe Culture Ministers Meeting (ASEM), a summit for 50 culture ministers from the two continents. The summit focuses on the creative industry and takes place in Rotterdam from 19 through 21 October, in parallel with the workshops.
The closed workshops will provide 40 creative entrepreneurs with an opportunity to forge contacts and exchange knowledge and experiences. They will also assemble a list of recommended agenda items for ASEM based on real-life experience with issues they believe need government attention. Read more
