Book Launch: Herman Hertzberger’s Shaping Freedom
To celebrate the publication of his latest book, Shaping Freedom, 93-year-old architect Herman Hertzberger will discuss the future of architecture and the architect’s role with young, recently qualified architects. Hertzberger advocates a social form of architecture in which the user is central. The impressive appearance of a building is not what matters, but how people use the space.

According to Hertzberger, the housing crisis cannot be solved as long as construction is primarily about profit. Architects then become set builders on an empty stage. He therefore advocates a different approach: architecture must connect with people’s daily lives. The focus should be on how space can connect us and help us live together, not on isolated buildings.
Shaping Freedom explores ideas that Hertzberger has been developing for years. The book builds on his well-known work Lessons for Students in Architecture, in which he criticised the soulless post-war reconstruction of the 1960s. Just as then, he draws hope from the enthusiasm of young architects and students. They take their responsibility seriously and stand up for important values. Shaping Freedom was written specifically for them.
