BioBlitz010 at the Nieuwe Instituut Zoöp
Nieuwe Instituut Zoöp is located in the middle of a surprisingly biodiverse environment. But what actually lives in “Rotterdam National Park”, as our neighbours from the Natural History Museum Rotterdam and its urban ecology research department Bureau Stadsnatuur call the city? How many mosses, birds, moths and other plants and animals can you observe if you record every living thing for 24 or 48 hours? Last year, the initiators organised counting days throughout Rotterdam for the first time. More than 1,300 different species were spotted in one weekend. Join in this year on Wednesday 22 May during BioBlitz010 2024!

This year you can also visit the New Garden at the Nieuwe Instituut for the second edition of BioBlitz010! Artist Frank Bruggeman and writer Peter Zwaal, who manage the garden, will be present throughout the afternoon during the count. They will explain how they work to try to maintain the greatest possible biodiversity with minimal maintenance and intervention. They’ll also be able to tell you what’s happening in the New Garden, which has been managed organically since 2015.
Frank and Peter can also help you with the ObsIdentify app and the observation.nl website, where you can immediately record your observations during the BioBlitz. The hospitality staff at the reception desk will also be able to help you if you have any questions about the app or the website.
Insect and plant experts from Bureau Stadsnatuur will be on hand to help you take a closer look at certain life forms. Also at the insitute’s reception, children and families can sign up for a Zoöp Quest: Want to get to know mushrooms, Egyptian geese and trees? Come along and make friends for life!
An installation has been set up on the Deck with videos, texts and objects that together tell the story of the Nieuwe Instituut Zoöp. Detour guide Maartje, who thinks that beetles are the most beautiful insects, will give a special tour on three occasions during BioBlitz010, when you can take part in an insect role play!
