Architecture and Democracy, 1965-1989: Urban Renewal, Populism and the Welfare State
Architecture and Democracy examined the role of the welfare state, politics and government institutions in urban renewal projects between 1965 and 1989, at a time when counter-cultures and populism were on the rise. The proceedings of the conference, organised by the Jaap Bakema Study Centre, are now available for download.
22 November 2019
The seventh edition of the Jaap Bakema Study Centre conference explored how social and political changes in the period between 1965 and 1989 influenced the architecture and urban design of the time. The rise of squatting movements and feminism, increased immigration from the former colonies and the growth of capitalism are among the main themes reflected in the 20 selected papers.
