Under the auspices of the Agency for Architecture, Design and Digital Culture, Het Nieuwe Instituut is making a contribution to the first edition of the London Design Biennale 2016 at Somerset House. Het Nieuwe Instituut has invited Studio Makkink & Bey to curate and design the entry.

In appointing Judith van Kranendonk and Adriana Strating, the Supervisory Board of Het Nieuwe Instituut has implemented all the proposed governance measures.

Adriana Strating will take up the post of Director of Business & Development from 1 September. In this position, she will ensure Het Nieuwe Instituut's financial future and contribute to the quality of internal decision-making, assessment and monitoring processes. Judith van Kranendonk will take up the chairmanship of the Board of Trustees on 1 October. Under her chairmanship, a new Board of Trustees will be formed.

From 12 June 2016 Irish artist Eva Rothschild will present work commissioned by Het Nieuwe Instituut that reacts to the status of Sonneveld House as a museum house.

The installation Space Embodied, on show from 12 June 2016 in Het Nieuwe Instituut, is about the new, free human as propagated by the Russian avant-garde. Space Embodied is an installation about the body in movement: life-size projections of dancers, a dance floor, stage sets and mirrors confront visitors in a direct and physical way with the historical material from the 1920s.

In four successive installations, Platform: Body/Space presents the results of research into four different forms of a single object - the yoga mat, the beach towel, the prayer rug and the tatami mat - and the ways they connect the human body with the surrounding physical (and sometimes digital) space.

The collection of the Nieuwe Instituut contains photographs, drawings and documentation of the stadium that Jan Wils built for the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928.

The city of Rio de Janeiro has an advanced command and control centre from which various scenarios - from traffic jams to acts of terrorism and natural disasters - can be predicted and potentially prevented. The installation Control Syntax Rio, on show at Het Nieuwe Instituut from 12 June 2016, shows how this Olympic city is being read as a matrix of potential calamities and the impact this has on the social climate of the city.

Never before has technology had a greater influence on the body. Our physical selves can increasingly be monitored and, when necessary, improved. And the relation between the human body and its surroundings has never been subjected to so much control. We are constantly faced with the choice: buy or boycott, opt-in or opt-out.

Until 31 July, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is displaying several loans from the collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut: designs for the Maison Particulière by Theo Van Doesburg and Cornelis van Eesteren, and the Centraal Beheer office building by Herman Hertzberger.

The 1972 Olympic Games offered the host country, West Germany, an unrivalled opportunity to portray itself to the world as a modern, democratic and culturally aware nation. Various design disciplines played a central role in the preparations for the games. Architecture, design and landscape architecture were integrated in a total design intended to exude openness and inclusivity. This carefully constructed image was marred two weeks into the games when eight members of the Black September Organisation infiltrated the Olympic Village and took the Israeli team hostage.
