In relation to its research into the Architecture of Appropriation, the institute has acquired the archive of Hein de Haan, an architect who worked closely with squatters and devoted his life to the preservation of the existing city, small-scale construction and mixed developments incorporating housing, workplaces and other amenities.

To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of De Stijl, Het Nieuwe Instituut has formed partnerships with several other cultural institutions, including a co-production with the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. The State Archive for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning is lending hundreds of works to various exhibitions being staged to mark the centenary of De Stijl.

On 6 February 2017 artist Reinier Kranendonk took over part of the exhibition space of Architecture of Appropriation on the third floor of Het Nieuwe Institute with Todopia, the semi-mobile living / workspace he designed and that was on display in the institute's foyer the previous week. Kranendonk issued a written statement to explain his motivation, commenting that it would be in keeping with the spirit of Architecture of Appropriation to move Todopia within the exhibition itself.

How do truth and myth relate to archives? From 28 January through until 25 June, Het Nieuwe Instituut is presenting the project The Transylvania Archive by the artist duo Marta Volkova and Slava Shevelenko. The project ingeniously weaves together themes such as the relevance of an archive, how artists relate to power, and fear of strangers.

In light of the recent events in the US and the responses the immigration ban has triggered all over the world, we invite the design community to join Het Nieuwe Instituut's ongoing programme of activities around migration and the role of architects and designers as relevant figures in the current socio-political context.

In the summer of 2016 Het Nieuwe Instituut began cataloguing the extensive archive of Pi de Bruijn (*1942). Among De Bruijn's best-known projects are the expansion of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam (1984-1988), the new building for the Dutch House of Representatives (1981-1992), and the rebuilding of the Roombeek neighbourhood (2002-08) following the Enschede Fireworks Disaster. His work as a supervisor is an example of the changing role of the architect and urban planner.

Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at Delft University of Technology are very happy to announce the renewal of their collaboration through the Jaap Bakema Study Centre for the period 2017-2020.

What if the right to affordable housing, working and living rather than property rights were made the priority of urban transformation? Since the 1960s squatters, with this idea in mind, have made an important contribution to the development of the city, appropriating parts of the city and changing it from the inside out. This practice is explored in the exhibition Architecture of Appropriation, on show from 27 January until 25 June 2017.

How deceptive or authentic is surface design? With the exhibition Designing the Surface, on view from 27 January 2017, Het Nieuwe Instituut is continuing a series of exhibitions about materials. Following earlier exhibitions on wood, plastics and glass, Designing the Surface focuses on the final coatings applied to materials and products in the production process. The finishing touch. In his installation Sleep Mode: The Art of the Screensaver, internet artist Rafaël Rozendaal presents a remarkable collection of screensavers in Het Nieuwe Instituut. These almost forgotten products were developed to protect computer screens against image burn. But they also have a special cultural significance because they produced the first entirely computer-generated images.
