Sourcebook

Based on the short film of the same name by artists Mandy El-Sayegh and Helena Hunter and curator Renan Laru-an, Sourcebook is an exhibition that expands on methods of artistic research, notably within archival collections, exploring and showcasing research impulses through their “conceptual, material and structural coincidences”. The exhibition can be seen until the end of 2022 in het Nieuwe Instituut’s Research Centre and is shown together with archival material from the National Collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut.
This selection is informed by the research project Collecting Otherwise and aligns with Het Nieuwe Instituut’s efforts to explore, reclaim and re-narrate archival research methods and tools. The exhibition Sourcebook not only questions Western interpretations of research and collecting, but pushes those boundaries into territories of serendipity, exploration and feeling.
Artistic investigations are placed in dialogue with the National Collection of Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning, through the selected archival material and publications intimately linked to Collecting Otherwise’s Case Studies. Both the books and the objects speak to those serendipitous ways in which archival research encounters institutions and other(ed) voices, forming the layers and textures of research cartographies.
