7 Personal Plastic Explorations

After the opening of the exhibition PLASTIC, the graduating students from the DesignLAB (Gerrit Rietveld Academie) were asked to react on the topic of PLASTIC. They were challenged to explore the possibilities and limitations of 3D-printing techniques in general and the material plastic in particular.

_What is plastic for you? _

_How can you use it within a design process? _

_Is it a material that enriches your possibilities and potential as a designer? _

_Is plastic a future promise, a home-made reality, or could it be both at the same time? _

Act, react, make it.

For some of the students the design processes related to plastic production and re-use were the starting point to investigate and test-out their prejudices, assumptions and dreams. Others used the potential of the 3D-printing in combination with an analogue, homemade, do-it-yourself approach. A variety of concepts and ideas led to very subjective explorations of both material as technique. The results are objects and works that could matter in very different ways. The outcome of the individual research is sometimes very tangible and applied but at the same time very much open for interpretation and further development. The results were on show in the foyer of Het Nieuwe Instituut.
