Measured drawing of a wheelchair, c.1965. Collection: Het Nieuwe Instituut, POTK d109-1

The influence of the wheel chair on the ground plan

The designer of this wheelchair is not known. The drawing was made to record the dimensions of an existing wheelchair. When designing care facilities and housing for the elderly, architects have to take wheelchair access into account. How wide do the corridors and door openings have to be? Bathrooms have to be larger and steps should be avoided. It is clear from the drawing that this is a wheelchair from the 1960s. Today, wheelchairs are somewhat larger and, above all, wider.
