Nieuw Amstelhof room (1966) J.W.H.C. Pot and J.F. Pot-Keegstra

J.W.H.C. Pot and J.F. Pot-Keegstra and Stichting Goed Wonen, Indications for electrical provision in homes for the elderly, 1966. Collection: Het Nieuwe Instituut, POTK d77

Electrical appliances

Architects Pot & Pot-Keegstra specialised in designing housing for the elderly. One of their many projects was the design of electrical provision for a room in Nieuw Amstelhof in Amsterdam. The drawing features remarks from Stichting Goed Wonen (the Good Living Foundation). Pot & Pot-Keegstra presented their design to the foundation in order to get advice on where to place the light switches. The ergonomic placement of electrical outlets is an essential part of the interior of housing for the elderly. The light switches must be at a comfortable height and the lighting must illuminate the whole room. It is not only the orientation, dimensions, colours and materials that are important in housing for the elderly, but also electrical features such as lighting, alarm systems, remote control devices and automatic sliding doors.
