Almshouses under the Tower (1941) F.A. Eschauzier
Traditional Dutch houses
Directly after the outbreak of the Second World War and the bombing of Middelburg, plans were made to rehouse the populace, including the elderly. Based on an idea of P. Verhagen, who supervised the reconstruction of Middelburg, Frits Eschauzier designed housing for the elderly at the base of the Lange Jan tower.
Eschauzier designed eleven terraced houses in an L-shape around a courtyard. Each house has a bedroom, kitchen and toilet on the ground floor and a guest room and storage space on the first floor. The complex has a single shared bathroom and a central boiler room. The building has a traditional brick construction with red roofing tiles. These traditional, Dutch materials created a familiar environment for the pensioners that fitted with pre-war building styles. A design for part of the interior shows that Eschauzier attempted to create a cosy atmosphere. The pensioners can enjoy their later years in this familiar and cosy terrace with all kinds of amenities at close hand.
