The A. H. Gerhardhuis in Amsterdam is named after the freethinker and humanist A. H. Gerhard. This retirement home is based on humanist principles and was the first in the Netherlands for non-religious pensioners. Architect Willem van Tijen specialised in housing for the elderly and designed this building in the modernist style. It houses 235 pensioners in a variety of dwellings including apartments for single pensioners and couples, without and without a private toilet. New residents, whether able-bodied or those in need of care, could select their apartment from a printed prospectus.
