Examples of shared family households

This report was compiled in 1947 by the National Catholic Foundation for Housing the Elderly, which aimed to build as many suitable homes for the elderly as possible. The report discusses different types of dwellings, with specific ground plans, intended for specific types of pensioner. Type C shows a plan and elevations for a residence for a married couple with a live-in daughter or female carer. Type D shows a plan and elevations for a residence for a better-off couple with one or two live-in daughters or female carers. The emergence of this kind of residence stemmed from scarcity of housing in the immediate post-war period. Sharing accommodation in this way was a tool in fighting the housing shortage.
