Long may we live!

Recreation and sociability
Large numbers of 'skyscrapers' arose in the Netherlands in the 1960s and 1970s. The arrival of the lift made it possible to house the elderly in high-rise flats. De Heemhaven provides accommodation for two groups of pensioners: able-bodies couples are housed in fourteen bungalows and 140 residents live in the main building. Collective and individual recreation is an important aspect of this retirement home. All residents can make use of the recreation room, where they can interact with each other and also receive family and friends. The garden, designed by Mien Ruys, is a continuation of the recreation room in the open air. There are spaces for individual relaxation and social activities.
