Long may we live!
De Gooyer (1978) – Abma, Hazewinkel, Dirks & De Haan
Pensioners' housing in a lively neighbourhood
The 1970s witnessed a revaluation of the historical urban fabric. Demolition of older parts of the city came to a halt and new buildings were carefully integrated into the existing environment. This is also the case with De Gooyer nursing home in de Dapperbuurt in Amsterdam. The neighbourhood was very run-down in the 1960s but had not been entirely demolished and the historical street pattern was intact. De Gooyer is located amid a lively neighbourhood, which is incorporated within the design. The shops, children's play centre, café and large hall with a stage create a friendly atmosphere that attracts people from outside. These amenities and the home's central location help to give the residents an integrated role within the neighbourhood.
