Homes for the elderly in the heart of Amsterdam
In the early 1970s a piece of land in the Jordaan neighbourhood of Amsterdam was made available for housing for the elderly. Urban renewal played an important role at that time, also in Amsterdam. In this period many retirement homes were built in existing urban neighbourhoods rather than in new satellite towns or suburbs. Aldo van Eyck and Theo Bosch played a pioneering role in urban renewal in Amsterdam. They collaborated on the design of this service centre with apartments for the elderly in Amsterdam's old city centre. The complex is built around a central garden with apartments facing both the street and the garden. In terms of style and detailing, the architecture complements the neighbouring buildings. In this complex, pensioners can enjoy their old age in the centre of the city.
