Talk Show 6: Repair, Reuse, Survive (5 October)

The sixth edition of the Osaka World Expo Talk Shows took place on 5 October at the Netherlands Pavilion, bringing together practitioners from Japan and the Netherlands to explore the theme Repair, Reuse, Survive. The session examined how repair and reuse can function not only as material strategies but also as cultural, ecological, and social frameworks for shaping more resilient futures.

Date: 5 October, 2025
Location: Event Space, Netherlands Pavilion

This sixth Talk Show featured contributions from Netherlands-based guests Claudy Jongstra, Jarrik Ouburg, and Jikke van Loon, alongside Japan-based participants Kiyoshi Tatsumi and Yoshikazu Yamagata. All speakers—Dutch and Japanese—presented their own practices, highlighting approaches that engage with regeneration, long-term stewardship, and the revaluation of existing systems and materials. The talk was moderated by Vincent Schipper, with language support provided by Satoko Yokoyama.

The conversation addressed how repair can operate across scales: from the restoration of fibres, garments, and architectural structures to the rebuilding of social infrastructures and shared ethical frameworks. Participants reflected on the importance of locally embedded knowledge, interdependence, and cross-cultural collaboration in shaping sustainable creative practices.

The session concluded with a closing reflection by Mariko Sugita, who tied together the themes of the discussion and emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue between Japanese and Dutch practitioners. Positioned just before the Pavilion’s Closing Reception, Talk Show 6 created a final moment of exchange and collective thinking within the public programme of Expo 2025.
