Os 100nários de Cabo Verde
4 July 2025 - 26 July 2025
To celebrate 50 years of Cape Verde’s independence, the Deck presents portraits of Cape Verdeans aged 100 or older, captured in photos and videos by João Paulo Tavares.
Life stories
Os 100nários de Cabo Verde (2023) is a multidisciplinary project which tells the life stories of centenarians from Cape Verde through portraits and interviews. For this purpose, Tavares travelled to several islands in the Cape Verde archipelago, as well as to places in the Cape Verdean diaspora. Each portrait in the exhibition has a QR code that takes visitors to a video of the person featured in the photo.
João Paulo Tavares
Born in Praia, Santiago, João Paulo Tavares is a Cape Verdean photojournalist with a background in multimedia design. Since 2018, he has worked at the national news agency Inforpress. He specializes in capturing the history, culture and memories of Cape Verde through documentary photography.
Tavares is known for his empathic, people-centred approach. Through his work, he tells forgotten stories and helps to preserve the identity of the people of Cape Verde. He is regarded as a key visual chronicler of the country.
He is currently working on Meio Século de Voz, a project about 50 years of journalism in Cape Verde that marks the 50th anniversary of its independence. He is also exploring the role of the secret radio stations and media that have helped to shape the country’s history.
