Body-Dough Synergy
In Body-Dough Synergy, the interior of the human body, specifically the digestive system, and sourdough yeast are brought into dialogue. Sourdough is employed in baking bread, which is then consumed and assimilated by the body. The digestive tract and yeast are obsessively examined through contact microphones capturing their subtle sounds, and also via film documenting the juxtaposition of the body and bread dough together on a sofa. They are observed as they rest, expand, breathe, and move together. The amplified sounds offer insight into the interiorities of both sourdough and the artist's body, invoking sensations of intimacy and vulnerability. A communal pillow, shaped to resemble an intestine, is present in the exhibition space to encourage people to gather, relax, watch, and listen together. The communal aspects of food production and consumption are also indirectly explored, reflecting on how human and non-human communities can gather to nurture, share, and sustain one another.
