1:1 Sets for Erwin Olaf & Bekleidung
On 17 November 2013 Het Nieuwe Instituut's regular Sunday talk show Rotterdammakers was dedicated to the interior. Marga Weimans, Dirk Peters and Ben Zuydwijk discussed the relationships between the interior, architecture and fashion. The afternoon closed with sets by DJ de Raaf and DJ Ari Deelder.
The interior is the most intimate part of the human environment, created by ourselves. Architect Adolf Loos even posited that: "Architecture has its origins in textile and structure is nothing more than the scaffold that holds this up".(Gesetz der Bekleidung, 1898). The interior could then be seen as the point of departure for the individual's living envrionment. Does that lend it greater importance? How do architecture and fashion relate to the interior? Do we literally design from the individual out? Or do we take the whole and scale this down to the personal level?
Rotterdammakers posed these questions to Marga Weimans (fashion designer), Dirk Peters (Barcode Architects) and Ben Zuydwijk (production designer). Marga Weimans won the IAF International Designer Award in September for her collection. Barcode Architects chose this occasion to unveil their design for Boijmans' new collection depot. Ben Zuydwijk is best known as set painter for Peter Greenaway and RO theatre, and has also worked as art director for Erwin Olaf and worked on TV series like 'Moeder, ik wil bij de revue'. The afternoon was moderated by Leon van Geest.
