Di Nos Tempo: The Cape Verdian Time Capsule
What would you like to pass on to your future descendants? What kind of answers or experiences would you like to receive from your own ancestors? Dentro Di Nos Tempo is a workshop by Janilda Bartolomeu as part of the Another Island project. It invites Cape Verdeans in Rotterdam to co-create a symbolic time capsule. Bartolomeu does not view time as linear or one-dimensional; it can be experienced culturally and collectively, for example through the memories of the Cape Verdean diaspora.

This workshop is an extension of Letras Pa Futuro, which Bartolomeu ran at the Nieuwe Instituut on Cape Verdean Independence Day. In this new workshop, participants will collectively assemble a time capsule reaching out to future generations and back to the past. It is an opportunity to give a voice to memories that have been ‘written out’ of linear history and allow them to experience alternative futures.
During the workshop, diverse issues and materials will come together in the time capsule. Please bring your own contributions, such as photos, videos, meaningful objects, and letters that you would like to pass on to future generations.
About Another Island
In the exhibition Another Island, researcher and artist Janilda Bartolomeu presents a film installation about the dreams and imaginary worlds of the Cape Verdean community in Rotterdam and Dakar. It offers a personal and poetic reflection on the shared heritage of the island group and the communities’ shared future in both cities.
