Preview Lernert & Sander on Rath & Doodeheefver
27 March 2014 19:30 - 19:30
The TV presenter Andrea van Pol will talk to the artist duo Lernert & Sander about their forthcoming installation and performance for Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile design fair. Commissioned by Het Nieuwe Instituut, the work takes inspiration from the historical collection of the wallpaper manufacturer Rath & Doodeheefver.
The Rath & Doodeheefver Archive by Lernert & Sander will be on view in Milan from Tuesday 8 through Sunday 13 April. Through their installation they investigate materials, the division between interior and exterior, and the relationship between heritage and the present. It was created with the assistance of the archive's owner, AkzoNobel.
At the Rotterdam preview, the artists will describe the work and how they developed it and share their thoughts on the archive. They will also provide a sneak preview of the performance they'll give in Milan.
By so emphatically focusing on a design archive in Milan, Het Nieuwe Instituut wants to raise the subject of preserving archives among the international design public. The very existence of various design archives is threatened, and that will inevitably lead to a loss of memory in this sector. Will that result in the disappearance of an indispensable source of inspiration, knowledge and reinterpretation for contemporary designers? Or is the lack of a collective memory the vital hallmark of the design domain?
Host Andrea van Pol will open the evening with an onstage Q&A with Dieuwertje Wijsmuller of Stichting Onterfd Goed. A mini exhibition of never-before-shown historical Rath & Doodeheefver pattern books, specially curated for this event, will be on view in the foyer of Het Nieuwe Instituut.
The Amsterdam-based artists Lernert Engelberts (b. 1977) and Sander Plug (b. 1969) make conceptual films and installations characterised by their sense of humour. Lernert & Sander (lernertandsander.com, wrong.tv) have worked for clients including Kenzo, Wallpaper*, the Sikkens Foundation, Brioni tailors, Knab and Amnesty International.
