The Representation of Food

30 October 2014 20:00 - 22:00

From the 1960s onwards, the food industry has become increasingly less visible to the citizen. Increased regulations, heightened efficiency and new economic conditions have resulted in a seemingly endless amount of connections between the beginning and end of the food production process. We hardly know how our food is produced anymore. To what extent does our understanding of the food industry still correspond with reality?

Our image of food production is often highly romanticised and contrasts sharply with reality. The worlds of the farmer and the citizen have become so detached that the dialogue on the future of food production lacks a nuanced perspective - 'small-scale' is diametrically opposed to 'large-scale', and 'biologic' to 'industrial' or 'intensive'. Such oppositions are impeding a more sustainable perspective on the development of our food system. Due to the lack of a common vocabulary, the discussion on the issues of food production seems to have hit an impasse. How can we refine and enrich this dialogue? What imagery can we use to represent the issues?

The programme includes a lecture by photographer Henk Wildschut, who was commissioned by NRC Handelsblad and the Rijksmuseum to map out the Dutch food industry through his photography. Although he started the project with a lot of preconceptions, his perspective on the food industry gradually became more nuanced. The resulting images offer a diverse and surprising view on the production of our food.
After the lecture you have the possibility to visit the exhibition.
