(Un)programmable Behaviour

People usually trust their intuition. Their reactions and sense of aesthetics are not driven by rational considerations, but rather by emotions. As lateral thinkers, they are able to organise information from different sources and thus acquire new insights or form judgements, which in turn lead to new questions. The learning ability of man has changed under the influence of the ubiquitous computer. Certain behaviour even seems to be programmed by the computer. What does that mean for our sense of humanity? And how can we compare the learning ability of people to that of machines?

This seminar, moderated by Maurits Martijn (De Correspondent), focused on human behaviour that is beyond control by the computer. Speakers included Rinie van Est (Rathenau Institute, author of Intimate Technology, 2014), Thomas Klinkowstein (Media A, Hofstra University, Pratt Institute, t.b.c.) and Geert Mul (media artist).
