Transition-Scapes: Reimagining Energy Futures
Nieuwe Instituut and Civic Interaction Research invite you to the closing event of the joint research project Transition-Scapes. This project has explored how energy transition scenarios can be visualised through interactive exhibition formats. The aim is to gain an understanding of what the energy transition means for people’s direct environment.
3 June 2025 11:30 - 16:00
In order to involve residents in these energy transitions and enable dialogues about them, various stakeholders aim to visualise future scenarios, allowing residents to understand what the transition’s consequences might be. This research project has designed such a tool: Transition-Scapes, interactive exhibition formats that illustrate future scenarios of energy transitions. Designers, exhibition curators, energy experts, researchers, and students worked together on a research-through-design approach for these interactive exhibition formats.
These Transition-Scapes have been used in Haven-Stad in Amsterdam and Huis van de Toekomst in Rotterdam, two specific urban development sites each bringing their own challenges for their communities. The results offer insight into how local energy systems can be visualised and designed. The closing programme consists of expert presentations, an interactive demonstration of two simulation models, and discussions about the role of design in shaping future energy governance.
