The future of collecting
Fourteen years after Making Choices, the Nieuwe Instituut is presenting a new collection policy for the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning. It focuses not only on what we collect, but also on how we do it.
23 April 2026 17:15 - 19:15
Since the Making Choices collection policy (2012), architecture and collection practices have undergone significant changes. Consider the rapid rise of digitisation, the growing size and complexity of archives, and the increasing focus on inclusion and participation.
The new collection policy focuses on the period from 1980 to the present and stems from these changing social and technological circumstances, new insights into archival science and heritage preservation, and the desire to make collecting more transparent, democratic and multi-vocal.
Three guests will reflect on the future and urgency of collecting architectural archives from their own perspectives, followed by the launch of the Nieuwe Instituut’s new collection policy.
