Thursday Night Live! Open Archive
28 November 2019 19:30 - 21:30
Guy Königstein, Donna Verheijden and Oana Clitan present their installations for _Open Archive. For the opening of the exhibition, the makers are interviewed about their work processes and the reuse of archival materials. __Open Archive _is a collaborative project of Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid (the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision), that stimulates the creative reuse of open heritage collections. The three makers spent six months researching the collections of both institutions to develop a concept for their work. They are interviewed about their work processes and the reuse of archival materials. Vincent van Velsen will share his views on creative reuse drawing from his experiences as a writer and curator. In Het Nieuwe Café Sjoerd Oberman from label Nous'klaer Audio will play.
Open Archive
Reuse of digital collections in museums and archives yields new stories in surprising, innovative forms. Under the name Open Archive, Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid invited creators by an open call to make new work using archive documents from their open digital collections.
Artist Guy Königstein, filmmaker Donna Verheijden and artist-designer Oana Clitan present their work during the Dutch Design Week 2019 and as of 14 November in Het Nieuwe Instituut.
Vincent van Velsen
Vincent van Velsen will discuss the position and politics of the archive in relation to contemporary art practices. He questions the idea of what an archive is - what it could and should be - and how new readings and uses can arise. With references to refusal, listening, speeding up and slowing down, he will show samples, remixes, appropriation and collages that shine a subversive light on what is usually regarded as an archive.
Vincent van Velsen is a writer, editor, and curator living and working in Amsterdam. He has a background in architectural and art history. He regularly writes for individual artists, museums, galeries and magazines; amongst which Mousse and Metropolis M - where he also holds the position of contributing editor. He curated exhibitions for Castrum Peregrini, Framer Framed, Nest and TENT, amongst others.
RE:VIVE
Sjoerd Oberman who runs Nous'klaer is a friend of RE:VIVE, a project by Beeld en Geluid that brings archives and musicians together to create new productions based on and inspired by audio collections. In 2020 there a RE:VIVE x Nous'klaer record will be launched with two RE:VIVE film scores.
