Studio Visits is a series of evenings dedicated to contemporary architectural practice, its challenges and its possibilities. Team Paul de Vroom + Sputnik invites professionals, students and the broader public to cross the threshold, take a peek into the architect's workplace and join the conversation.

Team Paul de Vroom + Sputnik started as collaboration between two studios, and an ambition to integrate conceptual and technical design expertise in a single practice. Since merging in 2014, the studio works on several projects in both Russia and the Netherlands. These include a recently completed housing complex in Moscow and a residential tower currently under construction in Amsterdam.

During the studio visit, the studio members will address the incentives, necessities and practicalities of merging two offices, a trend which seems increasingly present in today's practice. Providing insights into their working process, they will share the challenges that they encounter while operating in different contexts, as well as their techniques for mitigating disparate material and design cultures.

Team Paul de Vroom + Sputnik has existed only since 2014, but builds upon the knowledge and experience gained by partners Paul de Vroom, Henk Bultstra and Bert Karel Deuten in the offices they led prior to forming their partnership. De Vroom was co-founder of DKV Architecten (in 1985) and Bultstra and Deuten were co-founders of Sputnik (in 2003).

The partners have a shared interest in typological research, thinking in terms of models and the urge to translate their ideas into buildings. Each design project begins with a quest for the most appropriate type. That search is perhaps best described as laboratory work, in which floor plans are sometimes tested at actual scale before being elaborated further in drawings.

Studio Visits

Hosted and curated by an architectural studio in collaboration with Het Nieuwe Instituut, each evening will be organized around a tour, a presentation, an open conversation and a celebration. The gathering will serve as a catalyst for debate and architectural discourse; for strategizing urban policies and actions; for collaboration, forms of solidarity, and friendship as well as competition; and for - why not? - architectural gossip. Studio Visits is also a space in which to reformulate the social position of the architect in a fundamentally changed field of influence, by collectively exploring possible roles and responsibilities.

Previous Studio Visits were hosted by studios with diverse spatial configurations, forms of practice and portfolios: Powerhouse Company, Casanova+Hernandez, Lilith Ronner van Hooijdonk, LOLA Landscape Architects, MVRDV and Rotterdam's Urban Development Team en Shift architecture urbanism.
