The Sacred Beings programme during IFFR, by Young Curator Darunee Terdtoontaveedej, sets out a new context for contemporary queer culture.
26 January 2020 14:30 - 14:30
The Sacred Beings programme by Young Curator Darunee Terdtoontaveedej sets out a new context for contemporary queer culture. How are gender fluidity and spirituality shaped outside of the Western gaze? During this opening event, Mongolian queer activist Anaraa Nyamdorj will talk to artists showing work as part of Sacred Beings. What is their perspective on gender outside the Western context?
Thai director Sarnt Utamachote, members of studio WangShui and Samoan visual artist Tanu Gago will discuss such issues with one another and the audience. Topics will include the shifting historical way gender non-conforming people are seen in Asia, the LGBTQ movements in Asia and the false assumption that LGBTQ consciousness is a Western invention.
The panel discussion will conclude with a transfiguration performance by Raoni Muzho Saleh, whose short film Becoming Another is included in the Sacred Beings programme. There will be drinks afterwards.
