Open Archive Symposium
What is the difference between an artistic and an academic interpretation of archival materials? What is the relationship between artistic freedom and creative reuse? How 'open' should a collection be? What role does research play in making art? And does art influence the working methods of institutional archives? We will discuss these and other questions about the creative reuse of heritage materials during the 'Open Archive' symposium.

Archives are generally seen as large, impenetrable structures. Opening them up provides greater access to information and enables us to reinterpret history, in turn paving the way for undermining power structures. How can institutions become more accessible? And what can they learn from the creative reuse of their collections? With its theme of Research and Copyright, this symposium will explore artistic practices that involve using archival materials and making them available.
The symposium will take place on 22 June, live from the International Institute of Social History (IISH), with partners and speakers including Pictoright, THE ARCHIVE HOTEL and Mariana Lanari.
The programme can be accessed free of charge and can be followed in its entirety or as individual sessions. The morning plenary sessions will be followed in the afternoon by three break-out sessions.
Break-out sessions
An unavoidable issue when reusing archival materials is copyright. Whether you are protecting your own work or using another person's work, you always have to deal with copyright, even if you don't know who the copyright owner is. The afternoon programme will consist of breakout sessions on this subject with Hanneke Holthuis and Arlette Bekink (Pictoright), Thijs van Leeuwen (IISH), Iris de Jong (Het Nieuwe Instituut) and Dennis Hekker (Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision). You will have the opportunity to talk with them and ask questions about the copyright issues relating to (specific) archival materials. Open Archive
_Open Archive_ is an initiative of Het Nieuwe Instituut, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and the International Institute of Social History. In this programme, three makers are invited to search for new stories in the three institutions' digital collections and to make a new media work based on their research. The aim of the Open Archive project is to introduce both makers and archival institutions to the potential of creative reuse as well as the obstacles and pitfalls.
The three new works will be shown at Het Nieuwe Instituut from 5 June to 5 September.
