Programme
Jan Knikker, partner and director of Strategy and Development at MVRDV, gives an exclusive lecture on the working process of the office, its unique approach, and the evolution of the exhibition _MVRDVHNI: The Living Archive of a Studio_ with Het Nieuwe Instituut.
MVRDV NEXT, a group of in-house specialists that focuses on the development and implementation of computational workflows and new technologies within MVRDV's practice, will lead a challenging workshop in Het Nieuwe Instituut. In this workshop, MVRDV NEXT gives a brief introduction to the MVRDV Cloud, an interactive mapping and exploration tool that was specifically developed for MVRDV's born-digital archive. You will explore the Cloud and help them discover new constellations within it. What stories can be told?
Lastly, spoken word artist Kay Slice will give an ode to design. The Studio Visit+ will be concluded in style with drinks and a visit to the exhibition in Het Nieuwe Instituut, after which people can enjoy a talk show featuring all the founding partners of MVRDV, Winnie Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries, and hosted by the director of Het Nieuwe Instituut, Aric Chen. Also taking part will be researcher and exhibition curator Ludo Groen.
MVRDV
MVRDV was founded in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. The organisation now numbers 200 architects, designers, urban planners and service staff who develop projects through a multi-disciplinary, iterative and collaborative design process involving rigorous technical, creative and innovative investigation.
This approach has resulted in a range of building types, urban plans and conceptual visions, and extends to research, publications, and exhibitions. Built projects include Villa VPRO, redefining the work space for a public-broadcasting network, the stacked Dutch landscapes of the Netherlands Pavilion for the World EXPO 2000 in Hannover, Rotterdam Markthal (2014) and Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (2021).
Studio Visits
Hosted and curated by an architectural studio in collaboration with Het Nieuwe Instituut, each Studio Visit evening is organised around a tour, a presentation, an open conversation and a celebration. These gatherings act as catalysts for debate and architectural discourse; for strategising urban policies and actions; for collaboration, forms of solidarity, and friendship as well as competition; and for - why not? - architectural gossip. This first series of visits was hosted by offices including Powerhouse Company, LOLA Landscape Architects, UNStudio, PosadMaxwan, KAAN Architecten and Inside Outside.
