Studio Visit: AFARAI

20 March 2020 17:00 - 19:30

Studio Visits is a series of evenings dedicated to contemporary architectural practice and its challenges and possibilities. AFARAI invites professionals, students and the broader public to cross the threshold, take a peek into the architects' workplace, and join the conversation.

Due to the recent developments around the corona virus, this event has been cancelled. It is not clear on this moment if, how and in which form this event will take place at a later moment. Check the agenda of Het Nieuwe Instituut regularly: hetnieuweinstituut.nl/en/agenda.

In the light of _Multiplicity of Other, _AFARAI's contribution to the Dutch pavilion for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, this Studio Visit investigates the various techniques and tools for accommodating difference in spatial design. By adopting an intersectional and interdisciplinary approach, and ultimately exploring the boundaries of traditional architectural practices, AFARAI defines the presence of the Other as fundamental for cities.

AFARAI is an Amsterdam-based architecture agency led by Afaina de Jong. By using forms, languages, colours, patterns, and narratives that are Other, AFARAI works towards a more inclusive experience of space. Recent projects include the design for the exhibition Tears of Eros at Utrecht's Centraal Museum, and the upcoming exhibition on slavery at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Studio Visits

Hosted and curated by an architectural studio in collaboration with Het Nieuwe Instituut, each evening will be organized around a tour, a presentation, an open conversation and a celebration. The gathering will serve as a catalyst for debate and architectural discourse; for strategizing urban policies and actions; for collaboration, forms of solidarity, and friendship as well as competition; and for - why not? - architectural gossip. Studio Visits is also a space in which to reformulate the social position of the architect in a fundamentally changed field of influence, by collectively exploring possible roles and responsibilities.

This year Studio Visits will be hosted by studios with diverse spatial configurations and forms of practice, from Inside Outside and Atelier van Lieshout, to AFARAI, Atelier Rijksbouwmeester, and Studio Ossidiana.

Previous editions were organised with Powerhouse Company, Casanova+Hernandez, Lilith Ronner van Hooijdonk, LOLA Landscape Architects, MVRDV, Rotterdam's Urban Development Team, Shift architecture urbanism, Team Paul de Vroom + Sputnik, UNStudio, PosadMaxwan, KAAN Architecten, and Inside Outside.
